fight club antihero

what is the movie about?

fight club is about a man suffering from insomnia who meets a soap salesman called Taylor durden who soon ends up living with him in his secluded house after his apartment blows up the two men form a underground fighting club with strict rules and to fight other men who are fed up with their lives.

what are the themes of the film?

in fight club the films themes are: isolation, because he is suffering from insomnia (inability to sleep) which is caused by his feelings of being isolated,in the movie he never mentions any friends and he has to go to a support group to experience a “human connection” he looks for somewhere where he can show his emotion even if it is of a dark nature,he seeks something that cant be found in his normal life.

consumer culture, because the film shows how people who “have it all” are unhappy inside because their life does not fulfill them in a spiritual sense and they cant talk to anyone about their problems so they go and buy something that is expensive to make themselves better.

What is the style of the film?

i would say the style of the film is a dark and gloomy film, like a dystopia and it allows the film to show how the main character sees the world and how he feels dead inside enough to attend a support group to feel like he has a connection to someone else.

what are the genres of the film?

i  would say the genres of the film are drama because things get more intense as you watch the movie for longer and violence due to obvious reasons

What devices do people use to maintain brevity when messaging/texting? How does this relate to the way we speak?

In this transcript, I am going to say and explain all of the key devices which relates to messaging and texting and compare it to how we speak.

One reason why the devices that people use to maintain brevity when messaging or texting is because of Abbreviation. Abbreviation is when you shorten the words down and change the letters in the sentence when you are speaking to someone. For example from the transcript during a text conversation it says, “Kl” when it means cool or another word like hello and they are just trying to shorten it the conversation so it won’t take too long to text. Another example is, “G2G lesson now” Which means got to go to lesson now which combines it into one word instead of six words.

Even while we are speaking to someone else, you can tell by the language on how they speak and how it can relate to texting or messaging. Even during a conversation, it shows and tells us what they are saying, for example, “My coursework done so it’s cajj  (Big Smile Face)” it’s shows us a picture of a smiley face and it tells us what it is afterwards. Another example is, “(y) (Thumbs Up)” which shows that if it doesn’t show a picture then it will tell us what it is right next to it. There are some homophones which are used in the transcript. A homophone means the same sound but different meaning. For example, “too, to, two” or even “m8 hate ate” etc. This is one device that people use to maintain brevity when texting or messaging.

Another reason why people use devices to maintain brevity while texting or messaging is because of omission. Omission means removing parts of a word in a sentence, for example in the transcript it says, “I ain’t got no hw” which means I haven’t got any homework. People want to shorten the sentences while they are speaking to each other because it is quicker for them to text. This is one reason why people use devices to maintain brevity while texting or messaging.

In addition, another reason why people use devices to maintain brevity while texting or messaging is because they want to try and influence each other in the language that they use. Slang words are a common technique which is often used in many young people’s conversations while they are texting or messaging each other. This is another reason why people use devices to maintain brevity while texting or messaging.

Undoubtedly the most important reason why people use devices to maintain brevity while texting or messaging is because of acronyms. Acronyms means abbreviation made up of the first letters of each word, for example in the transcript it says, “Wuu2?” which means “What are you up to?” Another example is, “Lol” which means “Laugh out loud”. Even in the transcripts, it shows us the similarities and it shows us the differences on how people talk to each other, one page has a conversation talking in slang and the other page has a conversation talking in spoken language. This is the most important reason why people use devices to maintain brevity while texting or messaging.

Features such as omissions and abbreviations and acronyms in a conversation tell us a lot about the person. Sometimes when they use certain features, it can tell us about the relationship with one another. In the transcript they also use symbols as they send a message to someone, for example they use ellipsis “…” and explanation marks “!” and brackets “()”. While reading the transcript, I read about a couple of teenagers talking to each other who are having a casual conversation in school talking about lessons and sports and they were mostly talking in slang rather than spoken language.

In my opinion, I think that if they were in another situation like a job interview as an example, they wouldn’t be talking in slang but they would talk in spoken language because they would have to be more polite and speak more sense and appropriate and the majority of adults use spoken language rather than slang.

I do not think that there are many differences in these conversations in the transcript, they seem very similar, and there are a few similarities between these characters. They seem to be the same age because they both go to school and they always hang out with each other and talk a lot about the same subjects like school, sports and media and they all use abbreviations, omissions and acronyms to shorten their sentences as they find it better and quicker and better and cooler.

Young people have been texting by using slang words for a long time and I think it is even more common today because they would use their mobile phones or even the internet. The way that we speak to each other relates to our generations. The younger the generation use more slang and omissions and abbreviations and acronyms, the older generation use more spoken language.
These are the devices which people use to maintain brevity while texting or messaging and this is how I compared it to how people speak differently.

Week 4, Question 4

The source which I have chosen is Source 3 because it is an article about a woman on her own on a boat and tells it us about her experience and I didn’t chose the other two articles because they are similar because they are from a newspaper and they are both show pictures which is related to their title which is bold, however the differences between these sources is that source 1 has more details than Source 2.

The difference from source 1 and 2 and source 3 is that source 3 is telling us the story by the person who went through that experience and tells us her feelings and tells us what it feels like controlling something on your own and why she is doing it on her own and source 1 and 2 is telling us the story but it is the journalist who is telling it and is telling us what he is saying and thinking about the story and shows us things that we won’t see everyday.

Week 3, Question 3

Claire Francis’ thoughts and feelings during her journey across the Atlantic was fulfilled with a lot of emotions. At the beginning she was feeling unprepared and she was a bit nervous and she was very exhausted for her first day alone on her journey doing everything by herself on the boat which can be very stressful. It was like she was living in a washing machine, drying all of her clothes and it kept on raining most of the time and everything is so frustrating and her head keeps on going round and round and round and giving her a headache.

She couldn’t control herself properly by her movements and the boat moving side to side by the waves. Although she is proud of herself for what she is doing trying to achieve something in her life.

Shakespeare and Sylvia Plath

How did William Shakespeare and Sylvia Plath show the strength of feeling of women?

Both William Shakespeare and Sylvia Plath show feelings with themselves in their poems and plays and they use it on a character which is based on their lives. In the poems and the play, all their feelings started very bad, but in the end, they started to go very good. This is how they changed themselves and their strength of feelings in these poems and plays.

Ever since Sylvia Plath was a young child, her star was her father and she loved her father with a lot of happiness and excitement and she was thrilled to see him every day of her life, but unfortunately when she was eight years old, her father passed away and then all of her emotions changed with a lot of anger, nervousness, loneliness and rudeness because she has lost her father and now it has ruined her life and she feels all alone.

When she was a little bit older, she decided to write poems about her life and one of them was involved with her dad and the poem was called, “Daddy” and in that poem there was anger in different types of languages, upset, sadness, loneliness, religion, missing her father, speaks out and says what she feels and she was blaming her dad than herself. She was using quotations like, “Daddy, I have had to kill you, you died before I had time.” This meant she wanted to kill him herself for everything that he has done according to her, which was betrayal and he has ruined her life. Another quotation which she wrote about her dad was, “Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I’m through!” This meant she didn’t want to talk about him, she didn’t want to see his grave and she pretended that he never existed ever. She was hurt by expressing her feelings, but also very brave as she shares it to everyone.

Another poem which she wrote was, “The Arrival of the Bee Box” which is a bit different than the poem “Daddy” but there were some similarities. In this poem, she is acting like she is a God and she is taking control over a land which is a small box full of bees. She is happy with what she is doing because she is telling them what to do and they do what she says and she is treating them like slaves, but she also feels a little bit of sadness because she feels sorry for them and one of her quotations in this poem was, “I wonder how hungry they are, I wonder if they would forget me.” At first she was saying it sarcastically like she didn’t care, but then afterwards she really meant it. Another quotation she said was, “Tomorrow I will be sweet God, and I will set them free. The box is only temporary.” What she is saying now is that she wants to free them so that they won’t go hungry or thirsty ever again. All the feelings which are in this poem are sarcasm, scared, sadness and confusion.

“Daddy” and “The Arrival of the Bee Box” all have the same feelings like sadness, and happiness, and taking over control and forgiveness. And one of the characters most of the time blames the others apart from themselves like their dad and the bees and what have they done to them? Have they done something really bad to them? What could they have possibly done to change their feelings?

In my opinion I think the girl in “Daddy” was being very selfish and untrustworthy because it wasn’t the dad’s fault that he died, but she made that as a big situation and she was overreacting. Ever since she was born he took care of her and it was his responsibility to look after her, but when he died she had to take care of herself because she is becoming a grown woman, so she has to do all of her responsibilities and take control for her own actions. In “The Arrival of the Bee Box” I think that the girl took it too far by keeping all of the bees into one small box as they cannot breathe, they were hungry and thirsty and if she was one of those bees in that small box, how does she think she would feel? But then afterwards she forgives them and lets them free so they won’t die of starvation. That is the biggest strength for those two characters in each poem because at the beginning they both were angry, sad, taking over control and lonely and then their feelings changed by showing forgiveness, happiness, bravery and courage.

William Shakespeare loves writing plays ever since he was a young child and most of those plays which he wrote were all violent, romantic and comedy. One of the plays which he wrote was called, “Taming of the Shrew” and in that play there was a main character called Katherina. Katherina wasn’t like any other girls, she was different by her attitude and very rational and she only believes in things which most people do not believe in. Most of her family members and wanted her to find a new partner and most of the boys which she has seen she was not interested in and not attracted to, but the other character liked her, his name was Petruchio and he wasn’t like any other guys as well, he was lonely and was different by his attitude. On quotation they said to each other as they both first met, “Petruchio: Good morrow Kate, for that is your name, I hear. Katherina: Well have you heard, but something hard of hearing, they call me Katherina that do talk of me.” This means that Petruchio was trying to impress Katherina trying to make her like him, but she had no interest and she thinks he is stupid by how he speaks and how he looks.

Katherina had no interest in Petruchio whatsoever until he kept on begging and begging all the time and then she finally agrees. One quotation with Petruchio and Katherina was, “Petruchio: Who knows not where a wasp does wear his sting? In his tail? Katherina: In his tongue. Petruchio: Whose tongue? Katherina: Yours, if you talk of tales, and so farewell. Petruchio: What, with my tongue in your tail?” This quotation means that Katherina thinks that Petruchio is telling lies to her and without him telling the truth, he should leave her alone, otherwise she will “sting” him and he should let her continue with her life without a partner as she was standing up for herself and not letting anyone else control her life.

In my opinion, I think that Katherina is being very selfish and rude to other people as they are trying to be friends with her and make her be a better person than she already is, but she will not accept it, so she is just trying to live her life her own way without any friends so she can be a little bit more concentrated on her family, job, life and herself. However, Petruchio is trying to change it by becoming a new partner and a better man to Katherina to try and change her attitude and see how she is reflecting to herself and others and he thinks he can change that by doing things which Katherina hasn’t done before. In the end she did become Petruchio’s partner and her life started change, but also her feelings were starting to change for herself and others. That is the biggest strength for Katherina because at the beginning she was very angry, sad, lonely, sarcastic and rude and then it all changed and now she had courage, change of emotions/feelings, happiness and forgiveness.

This is how William Shakespeare and Sylvia Plath show their strength of feeling of women.

To develop a proposed structure for your answer

I will start with an intorduction about Sylvia Plath and William Shakespeare’s life when they were both young and how their childhood made them famous by being a poet and a playwriter.

I started with Sylvia Plath and her childhood was mostly about her and her dad and it started with happiness and then changed into sadness, most of the things aren’t always as they seem and those poems are called, “Daddy” and “The arrival Of The Bee Box”.  There is a lot of betrayal to others and she blames everyone apart from herself.

Next, I did William Shakespeare’s play called, “Taming Of the Shrew” and it is mainly about one charecter called Katherina who has a lot of different emotions during the whole play like confusion, sadness, loneliness and anger. I will use famous quotations that she used and express how she feels on herself and others.

symbolism

in page 179 of to kill a mockingbird it says “the concrete pillars supporting its south roof were too heavy for its burden”. the pillars could symbolise the fact that the racist people have started to change their minds about whether racism is the right way to do things because it says at the end of the sentence “there burden” the definitions of burden are :

a. Something that is emotionally difficult to bear.
b. A source of great worry or stress; weight
this could mean that empathy has started to affect them due to the fact that they see racism every day in the streets.
in the second paragraph it says “rusty unreliable instrument” this could symbolise how racism is because it will only work when peapole are uneducated.
it could also mean that the world is changing and that people of the old world are trying to hold there world together although there world is unreliable while people  of the new world built the court to spite peaopole who are still trying to hold on to the old world.

Homework

Hello Mr.Waugh

Unfortunatley I cannot find the homework on Edutronic I don’t know if you have already updated it or not but i know that you are going to put it on the website today and I know it was something related to the poem by Sylvia Plath and I do have all her poems so i was wondering if you can send it to me on WordPress or you can just tell me when you get back to me, it would really help a lot.

Also I would like to meet you at lunch time and talk about the theme study, I already have found two films and two books and one article, I just need to find one more so I was wondering if you can help me with that if that is no trouble and just more revision on Taming of the Shrew.

Righto!

Taming of the shrew

I think that this is not a fair comparison because Katherina is not being rude but is at ease with petruchio and she is also intelligent character to Petruchio who is an angry, unusual and out of control person who is trying to make situations complicated for himself and others.

Katherina is trying to protect herself and herself only and she is very sly by twisting the words of men who try to charm her. Her sister, Bianca, is trying to make her feel better and change her attitude but it was not working as Bianca is trying to find her true love and she can’t find it until Katherina finds here and that is Petruchio. One of the quotations was, ‘ Katherina: Of all thy suitors here I charge thee tell whom thou lov’st best. See thou dissemble not. Bianca: Believe me sister, of all men alive I never yet beheld that special face which I could fancy more than any other.’

She always thinks that she is right every time when she speaks and some people disagree with her. When she saw Petruchio at first sight, she had no interest in him and had no intention of marrying him whatsoever.

Petruchio is a very rude person and he does not respect Katherina and he is trying switch his personality for a bit of bread from Hortensio. He might be a little bit rich so whatever he does to anyone he wants them to show respect and do anything for him, he can’t do that to Katherina because she is more aggressive than him. Even though that Petruchio is getting paid and didn’t love her at first, he was beginning to love her every time they met.

One of the main arguments that both Katherina and Petruchio has had was and I quote, ‘Petruchio: who knows not where a wasp does sting? In his tail? Katherina: In his tongue Petruchio: Whose tongue? Katherina: Yours if you talk of tales and so farewell Petruchio: What with my tongue in your tail?

This is why that there is no comparison between Katherina and Petruchio

Taming Of The Shrew- Insults

PETRUCHIO

Where be these knaves? What, no man at door
To hold my stirrup nor to take my horse!
Where is Nathaniel, Gregory, Philip?

All serving men: Here, here, sir; here, sir.

PETRUCHIO

Here, sir! here, sir! here, sir! here, sir!
You logger-headed and unpolish’d grooms!
What, no attendance? no regard? no duty?
Where is the foolish knave I sent before?

GRUMIO

Here, sir; as foolish as I was before.

PETRUCHIO

You peasant swain! you whoreson malt-horse drudge!
Did I not bid thee meet me in the park,
And bring along these rascal knaves with thee?

GRUMIO

Nathaniel’s coat, sir, was not fully made,
And Gabriel’s pumps were all unpink’d i’ the heel;
There was no link to colour Peter’s hat,
And Walter’s dagger was not come from sheathing:
There were none fine but Adam, Ralph, and Gregory;
The rest were ragged, old, and beggarly;
Yet, as they are, here are they come to meet you.

PETRUCHIO

Go, rascals, go, and fetch my supper in.

Exeunt Servants

Sings

Where is the life that late I led–
Where are those–Sit down, Kate, and welcome.–
Sound, sound, sound, sound!

Re-enter Servants with supper
Why, when, I say? Nay, good sweet Kate, be merry.
Off with my boots, you rogues! you villains, when?

Sings

It was the friar of orders grey,
As he forth walked on his way:–
Out, you rogue! you pluck my foot awry:
Take that, and mend the plucking off the other.

Strikes him

Be merry, Kate. Some water, here; what, ho!
Where’s my spaniel Troilus? Sirrah, get you hence,
And bid my cousin Ferdinand come hither:
One, Kate, that you must kiss, and be acquainted with.
Where are my slippers? Shall I have some water?
